Blocked punt caps South Pointe rally

Rock Hill South Pointe led for just 58 seconds against Independence in the matchup of local high school football powers Friday night.

But that was enough, as Tay Hicklin's fifth touchdown of the night capped a dramatic 34-27 win for the visiting Stallions.

"This is big," said the junior quarterback, who rushed for 197 yards and added 77 through the air. "It shows what we have deep down inside of us to come back against a real good team."

The winning score was set up for Hicklin when James Jackson blocked Jason Conella's punt at the Patriots' 23 with 1 minute, 17 seconds left. Two plays later, Hicklin kept the ball on the option and went over the left side and into the end zone for the game-winner.

But the Stallions had to claw to get to that point.

Independence took an early lead on a Nyjee Fleming 32-yard run three minutes in, and extended the lead to 13-0 five minutes later on another Fleming score, this one from 2 yards.

Hicklin put South Pointe (2-1) on the board with a 55-yard scoring run early in the second quarter, but Independence answered with a 55-yard score , a pass from Evan Guest to Adisa Batten.

Hicklin threw a score late in the second to cut the lead to 20-14, but Independence made what looked like a game-changer early in the third quarter, as Breon Sturdivant stripped Jadeveon Clowney on a run and took the ball 45 yards for a score to push the lead to 27-14.

But Hicklin proved too much, scoring from 1 yard late in the third quarter, then scoring his third touchdown with just 3:47 left on a 29-yard effort to tie the score. Logan Ard's extra point hit the upright to keep the score tied, but the Stallions' defense stopped the Patriots (0-2) on their next drive, setting up the blocked punt and game-winning touchdown.

Guest tried to bring the Patriots back, but his second pass on the final drive was intercepted by Montay Crockett at the Patriots 40.

"I believe that was worth everybody's $5 or whatever it costs to watch these games," Stallions coach Bobby Carroll said. "To come here and beat a great team like Independence is a real tribute to these kids and the coaches. What a game."
