BALTIMORE Kenny Tate stopped Ricky Dobbs at the goal line with 34 seconds left, and Maryland stunned in-state rival Navy 17-14 Monday to break a seven-game losing streak that began last October.
The Midshipmen (0-1) held the ball nearly 19 minutes longer than Maryland (0-1) and outgained the Terrapins by more than 200 yards. But in a game influenced by untimely turnovers and huge penalties, the outcome was decided on a gritty goal-line stand.
Trailing 17-14 with a fourth down at the 1, Navy decided to go for the win. Dobbs took the snap, went to his left and was met by Tate, who would not relent to the momentum Dobbs brought to the line.
Notes
ALABAMA: No. 1 Alabama will face 19th-ranked Penn State without defensive end Marcell Dareus, and coach Nick Saban isn't betting on Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram (knee) making it back either.
Saban said Alabama won't appeal Dareus' two-game NCAA suspension for improper agent benefits.
CINCINNATI: Receiver Vidal Hazelton will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the season opener against Fresno State Saturday, costing the Bearcats one of their top receivers. Hazelton sat out last season after transferring from Southern California.
OKLAHOMA STATE: Quarterback Brandon Weeden is expected to play this week after spraining his right thumb Saturday when he hit it on another player's helmet. The Cowboys will host Troy on Saturday.
TEXAS: Running back Tre' Newton will start for the No. 5 Longhorns this week against Wyoming after scoring three touchdowns in Texas' 34-17 season-opening win at Rice. Newton led the Longhorns with 61 yards on the ground.
Cody Johnson, who started against Rice, was ineffective in key short-yardage situations. Coach Mack Brown said Johnson sprained an ankle on the second play of the game but didn't tell the coaches because he didn't want to come out.
