Under N.C. law since 2007, this information will be stored in the N.C. Donor Registry, a database that can be accessed only at the time of death by the state's three organ procurement agencies - LifeShare of the Carolinas, Carolina Donor Services and the N.C. Eye Bank. The information is then presented to the potential donor's next of kin. A family member's permission is not needed to carry out the deceased person's wishes.

Legislators created the S.C. Organ and Tissue Donor Registry in December 2008. Those who had previously registered with the DMV must re-register to make the designation legal. Information will be stored in the registry, which can be accessed only at the time of death by the state's organ procurement agency, LifePoint.
