Wall as good as advertised

By Rick Bonnell

John Wall wasn't the only reason the Washington Wizards traded away Gilbert Arenas, but he might have been the best one.

Point guard Wall, who was raised in Raleigh, was the Wizards' choice with the No. 1 overall draft pick. He justified that selection almost instantly with a triple-double in his rookie season. Tonight he plays his first game for the Wizards in Charlotte.

Wall got along well with Arenas and they both worked to co-exist as stars best suited for the same position. But when the Wizards dealt Arenas to the Orlando Magic (for forward Rashard Lewis), they cleared any impediment to Wall reaching his potential.

Wall has been good as advertised, averaging 15.9 points and 8.7 assists. Yet he might not be the front-runner for Rookie of the Year. The Clippers' Blake Griffin missed all last season due to injury, so he also qualifies for the award. And power forward Griffin has been spectacular, averaging 21.7 points and 12.7 rebounds.
