Police spent much of the overnight looking for two men on the run after a pursuit in west Charlotte.

The men were driving a car thought to have been involved in Wednesday afternoon’s shooting near rapper Waka Flocka Flame.

The subjects of the overnight pursuit escaped in the Westerly Hills neighborhood, but police got the car the two men were in -- a white Dodge Charger.

The series of events began about 10:30 p.m. on Dundeen Street, off Beatties Ford Road in northwest Charlotte. Undercover police officers spotted the white Dodge Charger, which fit the description of a vehicle involved in Wednesday’s shooting at the Car Stereo Warehouse on East Independence Boulevard.

The undercover police called for support, and when marked patrol cars arrived, police say the Dodge took off. The vehicle sideswiped one of the CMPD cars while getting away.

The pursuit ended on Woodvale Place, off Tuckaseegee Road, when two men abandoned the Dodge and ran off. Police conducted a manhunt for several hours in the area but did not find the men.

The 24-year-old rapper from Atlanta was at the Car Stereo Warehouse near Bojangles' Coliseum to have the sound system in his tour bus upgraded. Waka Flocka Flame, whose given name is Juaquin Malphurs, was outside the store when two vehicles pulled into the parking lot, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Men in the vehicles exchanged gunfire with members of the rapper's party, police said. One person was shot in the shoulder and taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

The man shot was Antonio Stukes, 20, according to police sources. Police are trying to determine what role he played in the shoot-out.

Stukes was released from an N.C. prison in December for convictions including assault with a deadly weapon.

Stukes' attorney, Adam Seifer, told WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner, that his client shouldn't face criminal charges.

"He was an innocent bystander who only went up there to talk to Mr. Waka about getting a record deal," Seifer said .

Malphurs also has a criminal record. He was released from jail in Georgia last month after he turned himself in on charges including drug and weapons possession, as well as criminal street gang activity, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The rapper voluntarily went to the police station for questioning and was released late Wednesday, said police spokesman Rob Tufano. No one has been charged.

Detectives are examining video from the store, Tufano said, as police search for the another vehicle involved in the shoot-out: a white Range Rover.
