In what's becoming a grim rite of spring for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Superintendent Peter Gorman will ask the school board to approve teacher layoff criteria today.
The presentation will give the first look at how many teachers may lose their jobs for 2011-12. Gorman has unveiled a preliminary plan for cutting $100 million from the $1 billion-plus budget that eliminates about 600 teacher jobs, as well as about 900 other employees. But it's unclear how many of those jobs are vacant and how many require actual layoffs.
Today's vote is required to start the layoff process in time for required notification and appeals. This is the third consecutive year CMS has pink-slipped teachers and other staff because of shrinking budgets.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. Fourth St., and airs live on CMS-TV Cable 3.
