Charlotte-Mecklenburg Superintendent Peter Gorman may be on Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's "short list" to lead his city's troubled schools, according to an article in Friday's Chicago Tribune.
But Gorman said Friday he's "not interested in being superintendent anywhere else."
The article was based on speculation from those close to the new mayor, who recently left the Obama White House. Emanuel's education team began meeting this week, with selection of a new chief executive officer a top priority.
"Emanuel is looking at a handful of potential candidates inside Chicago. But many believe he wants to nab a proven leader or education innovator from outside Illinois," the article says.
Other outsiders mentioned: Andres Alonso of Baltimore, John White from New York City and Jerry Weast, a former Guilford County superintendent who retired from Montgomery County, Md.
Gorman, a friend of U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, has a high national profile and has been mentioned in speculation about other superintendent jobs, including an opening in Las Vegas. He has repeatedly said he's not interested in leaving Charlotte.
