  Clothing retailer Paul Simon is also an artist - here he poses with some of his artwork in his SouthPark store. He has an exhibit of his work opening in April.

Paul Simon is known for his SouthPark and Myers Park stores, which provide the latest in fashion for both men and women. But this month, you can see how this clothier expresses his own creativity. His art show at Providence Gallery beginning April 1 will benefit several local non-profit arts organizations. For more details on the exhibit and opening reception, visit www.providencegallery.net.

When did you first pursue your artistic interests?

About ten years ago, I was standing in line at the DMV to renew my license. I looked at the age on my license and decided that I had better get going on all the things I said I would do when I had more time. I had always wanted to paint. I signed up for classes with Andy Braitman, and I’ll have my third show on April 1st.

What do your fashion sense and artistic eye have in common?

I spend my day working with fabric and design. Cloth is one of the original art forms, and some of the fabrics we deal with are just incredible. Every season brings new fabrics, new design, new technology, and new style.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I am totally into color. That’s what gives me the most pleasure when I am painting. I do not attempt to create a photograph of what I’ve seen, but rather to filter the experience through my brain to the canvas. I believe the paintings are personal but understandable.
