The Charlotte Eagles still are looking for their first goal and their first win of the new United Soccer League's Pro League season.
On a night when a swirling wind made any kind of offense a challenge, the Eagles (0-2) couldn't take advantage of some late chances and dropped a 1-0 decision Saturday to the Orlando City Lions at Charlotte Christian.
"It's a problem we've had for two years now - we've got to get some goals from somewhere," said Eagles coach Mark Steffens, whose team lost its opener a week earlier to Charleston by the same 1-0 score.
"We had some chances early in the match and we outplayed them in the second half. But you still have to score."
Each team put together just a half-dozen shots on goal in the less-than-ideal weather conditions. Eagles goalkeeper Eric Reed recorded four saves, including two big ones early when Orlando also had the sun as an ally.
But the City Lions (2-1) got the only score on a wobbly shot from just outside the 6-yard box by Robert Valentino during the 30th minute, an unassisted goal after Charlotte couldn't clear an Orlando corner kick.
That goal stood up despite two near-misses by the Eagles late in the game. Miguel Ferrer was just wide on a bending shot from about 25 yards. And Charlotte's best chance at a score came with about three minutes left. Jorge Herrera played a ball down the left sideline to Ben Page, who couldn't quite put the ball on the head of former Charlotte 49ers standout Chris Salvaggione at the back post.
"It was close," Steffens said. "It's frustrating because we know that even though that's a quality side, we can play with them. Our subs gave us a little life in the second half."
The Eagles' next game will be at 7 Saturday night against FC New York at Charlotte Christian.
