Gray leads Team Charlotte to finals

By Herb White

HUNTERSVILLE Rob Gray went into attack mode, and it pushed Team Charlotte into the AAU under-17 basketball finals.

Gray scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in the second half in Team Charlotte's 89-84 win against the Charlotte Nets Saturday at Hopewell High. Team Charlotte will take on Garner Road of Raleigh, a 79-78 winner against the Charlotte Storm.

Gray, who plays high school ball at East Rutherford, paced Team Charlotte with 11 points in the fourth quarter, primarily on drives to the basket. With the floor opened against the Nets' sagging defense, he sped into the lane for open layups or easy passes to center Montarius Hall, who scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth.

"We had a lot of energy as a team," Gray said. "Things just started opening up for me after we started pressuring on defense, and I got into the open court and got the chance to attack more."

The lane wasn't always that available for Team Charlotte. The Nets, an automatic qualifier for the national tournament, unleashed full-court pressure that staggered Team Charlotte in the first half. But Team Charlotte's backcourt quickness proved decisive in the second, turning a 62-59 deficit at the start of the fourth into a win. L.C. Cooks and Kendal Knor scored 14 each for Team Charlotte.

"We played good defense in the second half and as the game went on, and I guess I got my second wind," Gray said.

Five Nets hit double digits, led by Jarvis Haywood's 19 and 18 each from DeAndre Bembry and Michael Brown, but they struggled to contain Team Charlotte after a 6-0 spurt to open the fourth gave them the lead for good.

"That's probably my fault because we're an up-tempo, pressing team and I probably stayed with (pressing) too long," Nets coach Kerry Sergeant said. "My kids got tired; they had a tough game this morning."
