All-Observer Baseball

First Team

P: Peter Hendel, Waxhaw Cuthbertson, 6-3, Sr.: Signed to North Carolina, Hendel was his school's male athlete of the year and the Cy Young winner for Union County for the second straight season. He was 7-1 with an 0.67 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 63 innings. He hit .410 with six homers and 38 RBIs.

C: Brett Austin, Providence, 6-1, Sr: N.C. State signee was drafted No. 54 overall by San Diego in the Major League Draft. Austin hit .537 with 12 HR, 38 RBIs and had 14 stolen bases. He also scored 47 runs for a team that was nationally ranked much of the season.

INF: Jared Fortune, SouthLake Christian, 6-4, Sr: Hit .468 with 12 home runs, 9 doubles and 42 RBIs. As a pitcher, he was 10-0 with a 2.68 ERA with 77 strikeouts. He got both wins in the Independent Schools state championship series, helping deliver SouthLake's first baseball championship.

INF: Corey Dick, Albemarle, 6-0, Sr: Signed to UNC Wilmington, Dick hit .605 with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs. His 44 career home runs is second all-state in N.C. history.

INF: Stephen Wallace, South Stanly, 6-2, Jr: Hit .458 with 9 home runs, 39 RBIs, 14 doubles and two triples, helping lead his team to the state championship series. He was 20-for-22 in stolen base attempts.

INF: Logan Ratledge, Ardrey Kell, 5-11, Sr.: Co-Southwestern 4A player of the year and N.C. State signee hit .506 with 8 HR, 32 RBIs and 11 doubles. He was 14-for-14 in stolen base attempts.

OF: Trent Thornton, Ardrey Kell, 6-0, Jr: Southwestern 4A all-conference pick hit .402 with 8 home runs, 33 RBIs with 11 doubles. Was 8-3 as a pitcher with two saves, four complete games, one shutouts. Had 79 strikeouts in 58.1 winnings and a 2.16 ERA. Opponents batted .208 against him.

OF: Spencer Wiles, Belmont South Point, 5-11, Sr.: Hit .449 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs for the N.C. 3A state champion. He had four RBIs in Game 1 of the state champinoship series.

OF: Griffin Gum, Charlotte Christian, 6-2, Sr: Signed to Alabama-Birmingham, Gum recovered from offseason shoulder surgery to bat .550 with four home runs and 26 RBIs for Christian's perennial state powerhouse.

UT: Jeremy Null, Bunker Hill, 6-8, Sr.: Pitcher/outfielder is signed to Western Carolina. He was 8-1 as a pitcher with a 1.27 ERA and 98 strikeouts. He hit .619 and was the Catawba Valley player of the year.
