United Way to distribute $16.5 million

By Steve Lyttle

The United Way of Central Carolinas said Thursday morning it will be able to give the same amount as last year to most of the 91 agencies it supports.

United Way officials said the agency will distribute about $16.5 million to health and human service agencies throughout the region.

The organization will increase funding to 15 agencies, due to increased demand.

However, to make all this happen, United Way says it was forced to use $2.4 million from its reserve fund.

Officials said agencies that demonstrated a dramatic increase in need over the past year -- plus a proven record of results in meeting the need -- got the increased funding. United Way said the boosted funding was only 25 percent of the increases that agencies had requested, however.

"In the face of increasing demand due to high unemployment, coupled with dramatically reduced governmental funding, it is critical that United Way continue to be a stable source of funding for our partner agencies," said Jane McIntyre, executive director of United Way of Central Carolinas, which serves a five-county area.

The biggest increases this year went to the Salvation Army ($57,877 more than last year); Men's Shelter of Charlotte ($34,424 increase); and A Child's Place (up $17,763).
