Augustin, Walker might play together

By Scott Fowler

The fight to be the Charlotte Bobcats' starting point guard next season will be one of the most competitive on the team, with incumbent D.J. Augustin trying to fend off rookie Kemba Walker.

But coach Paul Silas brought up an interesting point Wednesday, wondering aloud if the two undersized point guards could play alongside each other during some stretches of a game.

"Can these two guys play together?" Silas asked. "I'm not sure about that right now ... If they do, I'm sure we're going to have to do something other than play a man-to-man (defense), so we're going to have to figure all that out. If we can figure out how they play together defensively, we're going to have a real plus on offense with their running ability and quickness and so forth."

Augustin and Walker are both around six feet tall, which means they are susceptible to post-ups and would have a serious height disadvantage against some of the league's bigger guards. However, they will likely be the two fastest players on the team.

TEMPLE'S TIME? The Bobcats finished trying out 18 free agents Wednesday. They plan to invite "two or three" to training camp, Silas said - when and if there is a training camp for the 2011-12 season, which is in danger because of the impending NBA lockout.

Silas said he wasn't sure which players would be called back yet.

One of the players who may well be invited back is point guard Garrett Temple, who played 12 games late in the season for the Bobcats in 2011 but is once again a free agent.

At 6-5, Temple has good height for a point guard but sometimes struggles bringing the ball up against pressure and getting the offense into its sets. He also was an off-and-on shooter for Charlotte, but Silas said that has improved this summer.

"His shooting has been phenomenal," Silas said of Temple's free-agent camp performance. "And he understands how to play. It was kind of touch-and-go last year when we brought him in, but it's a lot better now, so we'll just see how it goes."

DEMARRE'S DEAL: One of the players in the free-agent camp who also looked like he might have a chance to stick with the Bobcats was 6-8 forward DeMarre Carroll, who played in 12 games last season for Memphis and Houston.

Carroll said the Bobcats' free-agent camp was the seventh and last one for him, following camps in Indiana, Oklahoma City, Denver, San Antonio, Cleveland and Atlanta.

"It went well," said Carroll, who like other free agents will be in limbo until the NBA and players reach a new collective bargaining agreement. "I was nicked up for this one, but right now you don't have time for any injuries."
