WBTV is reporting that a worker was critically injured after a boom truck accidentally came in contact with live power lines in south Charlotte Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot outside the Sharonview Federal Credit Union at the intersection of Carmel Road and Pineville-Matthews Road.
Charlotte Fire Department Spokesman Rob Brisley said a contractor operating a boom truck came in contact with high-tension power lines.
Duke Energy Spokeswoman Betsy Conway said the worker was attempting to position a sign located on the ground and was using the boom truck to hoist a sign into place. The contractor is not a Duke Energy employee, she said.
When the truck accidentally came in contact with the power lines, the truck operator received an electric shock.
MEDIC Spokeswoman Kristin Young said the patient had life-threatening injuries. The worker was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main.
As a result of the incident, Duke Energy said there are about 2,800 customers in the immediate area without power. Duke Energy crews were on the scene as of 3:45 p.m. working to remove the truck from the power line.
"They will be working as quickly and safely as possible to get those customers without power back online," Johnson said.
Police have blocked one lane of Carmel Road near this intersection.
