MIAMI Former Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, a second-degree misdemeanor, for his part in a traffic crash last week, the Florida Highway Patrol said Monday.
He also was cited for failure to leave his driving and contact information, FHP said.
"Our investigation is complete," FHP spokesman Sgt. Thomas Pikul said.
A call to Mourning's lawyer seeking comment was not returned Monday.
The announcement doesn't close the case. The charges against Mourning will move into court, where Mourning can plead or fight the charges.
He also remains one of several people named in a civil suit filed on behalf of the man whose car he hit.
On Monday, FHP released its report of what happened in the crash.
The Mourning crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. July 17. Mourning, 41, was driving home to Coral Gables, Fla., with his wife, Tracy, from the wedding of Heat forward Chris Bosh at the Fontainebleau Hotel.
When Mourning's blue 2010 Porsche Panamera S slid into a 2010 Audi A4, one of two crashed cars in the middle of the highway, near the Interstate 95 intersection, according to FHP.
The drivers of the crashed cars weren't in their vehicles when Mourning's Porsche crashed into the Audi four minutes later, the report said.
According to FHP, Mourning got out of his car and checked on the men.
He went home and called police, who told him he had to go back to the scene. Mourning contacted FHP more than an hour after the crash, the report said.
Mourning and his wife returned to the accident scene in Tracy Mourning's SUV, FHP said. She drove.
Alcohol was not a contributing factor in either of the crashes, according to the FHP.
