A mother and her boyfriend face involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl last week, Gaston County police say.
Addison Lanham died late Thursday at Gaston Memorial Hospital, and police say an autopsy shows the toddler succumbed to sepsis, an infection of the blood. Police say the little girl also had a broken leg and had not received medical care.
Shanna Lanham, 32, and Jason Wells, 33, were charged Tuesday night with involuntary manslaughter and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Wells already was in jail on charges of failing to register as a convicted sex offender.
On Wednesday, additional charges of felony child abuse were filed against Lanham and Wells. During a bond hearing, the judge indicated indictments would be sent to the Grand Jury on Monday.
Assistant Gaston District Attorney Stephnanie Hamlin said "our office plans to prosecute this case to the fullest extent possible."
Meanwhile, the owner of a Gaston County funeral home says he is paying the funeral and burial costs for the little girl.
Addison Lanham was rushed to the hospital last Thursday evening when Wells, who was babysitting her while Shanna Lanham worked, called his girlfriend and said the 2-year-old was unresponsive. The mother rushed to the Americas Best Inn Motel, where they were staying, and tried unsuccessfully to revive her daughter.
Earlier this week, she told NewsChannel 36, the Observers news partner, that she tried to get her daughter to wake up.
Addison, its mommy! Addison, its mommy, she said she told the little girl.
The Medical Examiners Office says Addison Lanham had suffered a broken leg, and an infection had developed. The leg was not properly set, according to medical reports. In addition, Addison had developed the bacterial disease MRSA.
The investigation revealed there was a pattern of injury and negligence that led to Addisons death, police Capt. Jay Human said Wednesday.
Shanna Lanham is being held under $1 million bond, and Wells is in the Gaston County Jail under $1.75 million bond.
Scott Greene, owner and funeral director of Greenes Funeral Services in Gastonia, said he was providing a full traditional funeral service for Addison Grace Lanham. The childs mother, Shanna Lanham, is his step-cousin, Greene said.
But for now, he said, funeral arrangements are on hold.
Greene said he and Shanna Lanham never had a close relationship. In the past, shed had some issues and made some bad choices, he said. But when I saw her at Christmas, a year and a half ago, she seemed to be getting her life straightened out.
When he talked with her late Tuesday, before she was charged by police, Greene said she seemed distraught.
Greene said service arrangements hadnt been finalized because he was waiting on the arrival of an infants casket from Georgia. When the service does take place, he said it will be at Ragan Wesleyan Church, with burial in Westview Gardens in Bessemer City.
