Charlotte Eagles rush salvages a point

By Keith Cannon

Down two goals with just 15 minutes to play, the Charlotte Eagles didn't have any options left Friday night against the visiting Rochester Rhinos .

"We had to go for it," Eagles coach Mark Steffens said after his team rallied for a 2-2 draw in a USL Pro League soccer match in front of 1,123 fans at Charlotte Christian.

Jorge Herrera and Chris Salvaggione scored two minutes apart to salvage a point in the standings for the Eagles (8-7-5, 29 points), who trail the Wilmington Hammerheads by three points for the fourth and final American Division berth.

"If you aren't going to win, you've got to get a point," said Salvaggione, a former Charlotte 49ers star who rolled a shot off his right foot from outside the 6-yard box during the 80th minute for the tying goal.

"We've talked all year about how we're going to be the team that doesn't stop working until the game ends. We showed that tonight."

The Rhinos took what looked like an insurmountable 2-0 lead when Andrew Hoxie punched in a score at the back post in the 75th minute.

For the final 15 minutes, though, the Eagles' lineup consisted almost entirely of offensive-minded players.

"We had to take some chances," Steffens said.

Herrera boomed a left-footed shot from about 15 yards for the Eagles first goal, converting a pass from Diego Martins during the 78th minute. Salvagionne's flick on the net tied the score, but it took one more big play to save the draw.

Charlotte goalkeeper Eric Reed made a diving stop with two minutes to play to foil a dangerous shot by Rich Costanzo on a counterattack.

"We were attacking so well it almost cost us the game," Steffens said. "But that's what you can do when you have a keeper like Eric back there."

The Eagles have four games left. They'll play at Rochester and Pittsburgh next weekend and finish their regular-season home schedule Aug. 10 against Harrisburg.
