Teen supports shelter

Waxhaw’s Joey Skavroneck, a senior at Cuthbertson High, recently won recognition from Turning Point, one of the Southeast region’s largest shelters for abused women and children.

The Union County group gave Skavroneck its Compassion Award. In the past year, he raised more than $1,500 for the shelter through the Waxhaw-Weddington Sunrise Rotary’s annual Town & Country Run; won first prize in public speaking at a Future Business Leaders of America conference with a speech on Turning Point services; and was appointed to the national advisory board of Break the Cycle: Empowering Youth to End Domestic Violence.

Skavroneck is attending a summer session on modern business trends at Yale. From left: Turning Point’s Terry Prince and Naomi Herndon, Skavroneck, and Nico Ianelli of the Sunrise Rotary Club.
