Discovery Place presented its first Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn Award this summer to Carson Trapp, 14, of Charlotte.

The award “recognizes teen apprentices who have exhibited a passion for science and nature, a willingness to learn and a commitment to sharing their knowledge and experiences with others.”

Carson volunteered more than 470 hours at the Charlotte Nature Museum within about 16 months, feeding animals, helping visitors with animal encounters, guiding summer campers and more.

The award memorializes Dunn, who had volunteered more than 1,500 hours as a Sci-Teen at Discovery Place, developing and presenting demonstrations to visitors and working with the summer camp program, as well as expressing a profound love of science and learning in other venues, before his death in 2009.
