Thirteen N.C. students have received Horatio Alger Scholarships from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, the first time the association has offered a state scholarship in North Carolina.

Among those receiving $5,000 each toward their college education, two are in the Observer area: Jessica Dewolf of North Gaston Senior High in Dallas; and Marvin Long of Union Country Early College High in Monroe.

Winners were selected for "overcoming adversity while succeeding academically, contributing to the community and exhibiting exemplary character," according to the association.
