The Charlotte Latino community is set to deliver petitions today to the local Democratic Party headquarters protesting what they say has been President Barack Obama's "unprecedented expansion" of a program that has led to massive deportations.
In what is called a "National Day of Action," the petitions demand that the Obama administration end the Secure Communities, or SCOMM, program. Thousands of petitions will be delivered to Democratic Party offices across the country.
A rally is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. today at the Charlotte party headquarters, 500 E. Morehead St.
"They will be expressing their outrage for President Obama's recent and controversial decision to aggressively expand the use of local police officers as immigration agents through the highly controversial federal program known as Secure Communities, or SCOMM," a statement from local Latinos said.
Mar Betancourt of the United 4 the Dream group says: "There have been more deportations on President Obama's watch than at any time in American history. If the president continues to alienate Latino voters, he will lose the election."
