The C.D. Spangler Foundation has donated $100,000 to MeckEd, the nonprofit organization that helped Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools campaign for more tax money this past spring.
MeckEd Executive Director Bill Anderson said the $100,000 will go into the group's general operations budget. The group, which runs on an annual budget of about $613,000, will use the money to further its mission of informing, educating and engaging the community about public education issues.
"We're very grateful to the Spanglers for supporting us," Anderson said.
Earlier this year, the Observer revealed that MeckEd received $125,000 from former Superintendent Peter Gorman to conduct a publicity campaign about CMS' multi-million dollar budget woes. Gorman gave the group the money out of a $250,000 "personal development" grant given to him by the Spangler Foundation.
Critics said the arrangement should have been made public as CMS officials campaigned for more money.
Anderson said the money from Gorman was used solely on the publicity campaign, but the most recent $100,000 donation from the Spanglers will go directly to support MeckEd's operations.
