South Point High graduate Ash Davis of Belmont got a little parental incentive to earn 14 years of perfect attendance at school: cash. For each school year he completed without missing a day, Eddie and Robin Davis told him in elementary school, he’d get $1,000 put into a savings account.
When he graduated, he could spend it to travel, buy a car or do as he pleased. But, said Robin Davis, “the deal was null and void if he missed a single day. … If he missed just one day, all the money was gone.” By the time Ash got to South Point, he had another prize in mind: his dad’s silver BMW convertible roadster.
“He started eyeballing that car pretty hard,” said Robin Davis. “He kept saying, ‘I’d really like to have the car and let y’all keep the money.’ So that’s what we wound up doing.”
At South Point, Ash wrestled, ran cross country and track, served as an executive officer in Junior ROTC, took Spanish Honors and volunteered through the Interact Club. He won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he trained this summer. He plans to pursue a career in dentistry and aviation while in the Navy.
