Charlotte Christian placekicker seals victory

By Joe Habina

CONCORD In a game whose outcome was determined so much by field position, Charlotte Christian placekicker/punter Wes Medeiros might have been the most valuable player.

In the Knights' 17-8 non-conference victory over the host Concord First Assembly Eagles on Friday, not only did the junior connect on two extra points and a field goal, he also punched three of four kickoffs into the end zone and averaged 47 yards on four punts, all in the second half when Christian was protecting a vulnerable lead.

Helping in Christian's field position was freshman defensive back Josh Hall, who had two interceptions. His second came at his own 5-yard line with five minutes left in the game as the Knights protected their final lead.

Working a short field benefited Christian in the first half. All four of the Knights' possessions started outside their 35-yard line. Medeiros completed Christian's first drive with a 25-yard field goal.

Starting their next possession at their 39, the Knights scored in six plays. Bo Hines' 22-yard run was the drive's key play but a First Assembly horse collar penalty for 15 yards at the end of it almost doubled the play's production. On the next play, Hines, who had a game-high 120 yards on 16 carries, ran untouched for a score.

The Eagles took possession on their 11 with 3:43 left in the first half and nearly scored. Allen Calvert connected with Dante Simmons for an 82-yard pass to the Christian 10.

On fourth down, a Knights pass interference call gave the Eagles another first down at the Christian 7-yard line. First Assembly was able to run four plays in 13.9 seconds but got no closer than the 3.

Christian built a 17-0 lead in the third quarter after its defense held on fourth-and-two at the First Assembly 41. On the next play, Jeb Blazevich caught a 42-yard touchdown pass in stride up the right sideline from Eric Lynch.

The Eagles answered when they faced a fourth-and-seven at the Knights' 8-yard line. Calvert found Will Nork on a touchdown pass and Fred Bates ran in the two-point conversion with 11:08 left in the game.
