Running, crawling and slogging onward

On a course near Huntersville, 13,500 participants put themselves to the test for 3.08 miles.

They crawled through mud pits and under barbed wire. They climbed over walls and up rope ladders. They leaped over fire.

It was all done to say they were part of the two-day traveling Warrior Dash that finished Sunday on Neck Road near Huntersville. In all, more than 13,500 thrill-seeking runners from across the country competed - in waves of 500 - at Warrior Dash Carolinas, billed as 3.08 miles of the "World's Most Extreme and Fun Running Event."

Angela Yeh of Mooresville came dressed as Wonder Woman. She thought it an apt way to celebrate her 41st birthday.

Derrick Whisel of Pittsburgh, Pa., crawled underneath barbed wire, up to his chin in mud. He wore the Dash-dispensed Viking helmet.

And Nick Gibcumb, on liberty from the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, had to remove his glasses, covered in mud, to see.

They all made it through 11 obstacles that also included cargo nets and waist-deep water.

Awards were given. But the best one: Getting hosed off at the finish line. David Perlmutt
