Several dozen high school seniors from the Charlotte region are among 16,000 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These students will advance in the competition for more than 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $34 million, that will be offered next spring. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to reach the finals, and more than half of those will win National Merit Scholarships.

Three types of scholarships are offered - $2,500 awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; about 1,000 corporate-sponsored awards; and 4,800 scholarships offered by colleges and universities.
