These parks are a dog's best friend

  • All animals (except cats) must be on a leash, or contained within a fence or an invisible fence. An animal may be loose in its own unfenced yard if there is an adult next to it, and if it responds to verbal commands.

Violations will be investigated, with fines ranging from $50 for the first violation up to $500 and permanent seizure of the animal for a fifth.

To report a loose animal, call 311.

The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have strict leash laws regarding dogs and their owners.

Still, if you want to let your dog run free but don't have a fenced yard the size of an athletic field, you've got options.

The county has several free dog parks, all of which are open from 7:30 a.m. until sunset seven days a week.

They are:

Frazier Park, along Interstate 77 near West Trade and Sycamore streets. The dog park is 1.3 acres, with separate sections for small and large dogs and a public water supply for doggie drinks.

Barkingham Park is at Reedy Creek Park, 2900 Rocky River Road. This park has a four-acre, fenced-in, off-leash area.

Ray's Fetching Meadow is at McAlpine Creek Community Park, 8711 Monroe Road. This park has a one-acre, fenced-in, off-leash area.

Davie Dog Park is at William R. Davie District Park, 4635 Pineville-Matthews Road. This park has a five-acre, fenced-in, off-leash area. There are two separate sections to the new dog park - one for large and one for small dogs.

Shuffletown Park is at 9500 Belhaven Blvd. The dog park is four acres, with separate sections for small and large dogs and a public water supply for doggie drinks.

Swaney Pointe K-9 Park is at Ramsey Creek Park, 18441 Nantz Road in Cornelius. This park has a four-acre, fenced-in, off-leash area. There are two separate sections to the new dog park - one for large and one for small dogs.

Remember, dogs must be current on their vaccinations to use the off-leash areas, and children younger than 12 are not permitted in the parks for safety reasons.
