York lawyer fatally shot; girlfriend charged

A York woman has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, York attorney Michael Howe.

York police say Christina Adams, 27, Howe's live-in girlfriend of several years, shot at Howe multiple times about 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Police found Howe, 44, raised in York, dead on his back in a bathroom at his home at 18 Smith Street near downtown, York Police Lt. Rich Caddell said this morning.

Police charged Adams with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. She is being held at the Moss Justice Detention Center in York.

When police arrived at the house, Adams was in the yard. Nearby, they found a gun believed to be used in the shooting, police Chief Andy Robinson said at a morning news conference.

The Herald in Rock Hill wrote that an incident report said responding officers asked Adams what had happened. "He has been shot," Adams told them.

She added: "He hit me."

When police asked her about the gun, "all she could recall was she dropped it as she ran out the back door," the report said.

It is the second murder of a York attorney in less than two years. Last year, former York mayor and attorney Melvin Roberts was found strangled to death outside his York home. He'd also been shot. His longtime girlfriend is charged with the murder.

In Monday's shooting, York police are still investigating and don't know yet what started the shooting. "From a witness account, we know she pulled a gun and started shooting at Mr. Howe," Caddell said.

He didn't know how many times Howe was hit. An autopsy is scheduled for later today, he said.

The witness, in the house at the time, took off after the shooting began and ran to alert police. A child, believed to be Adams' daughter, came with the witness. Officers were dispatched to the house within minutes and found Howe dead.

Police aren't identifying the witness, but said he was a family friend.

It wasn't the first time police had been dispatched to the house. "Officers have been to that residence in the past," Caddell said. "We're still processing reports to see why. But we've been sent there more than once."
