Covenant Day School senior Brent McKnight will be awarded the Heroism Award by the Boy Scouts of America during his troop’s Court of Honor Oct. 27. McKnight will receive the award for saving the life of his teacher, Joe Rego.

In February, while on a mission trip in Haiti with students and staff, Rego began to choke on a sandwich. Rego saw McKnight walking toward him and immediately showed him the universal choking sign, then turned his back to McKnight.

By the time Rego saw McKnight, he could not breathe. McKnight performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving the life of Rego.

“I am thankful for God’s provision for placing Brent in my path,” Rego said. “I was relieved when I saw him coming that day, because I knew he was a Boy Scout…. (He) was able to act immediately.”
