The Men's Shelter of Charlotte and Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont are each getting $200,000 in grants as part of Bank of America's annual Neighborhood Excellence Initiative.

Bank of America is also recognizing five "local heroes" for their commitment to community service. Each will get a $5,000 donation to the nonprofit charity of their choice.

They are:

Dale Beatty, donating to American Cancer Society/Iredell County Relay for Life.

Janine Davis, donating to Girl Talk Foundation.

Dr. Marilyn Furman, donating to the Urban Ministry Center.

Kathy Izard, donating to the Urban Ministry Center.

Elijah Watson, donating to Striving Together Achieving Real Solutions (S.T.A.R.S.) Math & English Academy.

Bank officials cited the Men's Shelter of Charlotte for providing safe emergency shelter while working to end homelessness. Last year it housed 2,800 men and served 363,733 meals.

The $200,000 from the bank's Neighborhood Builders program will help implementation of a "Rapid Re-housing" model that moves men out of the shelter and into housing by providing short-term assistance, officials said.

Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont won support for helping train the unemployed for new jobs. Last year, more than 3,600 people received intensive employment and training services and more than 2,000 were placed in jobs, officials said.

Bank of America is investing $20 million in its Neighborhood Excellence program nationwide this year, bank officials said.
