A lot of actors need a soapbox to feel happy, but Corbin Bernsen needs a Soap Box Derby. He's put his celebrity behind the All-American Soap Box Derby, which celebrates its 75th anniversary next year, and is barnstorming with a Derby-themed movie he wrote, directed and produced. "25 Hill" will play Saturday in Morganton and Charlotte on the southernmost stops of the tour, before a Derby fun race Sunday.

Bernsen (star of TV's "Psych") plays Roy Gibbs, who feels empty after his firefighter son dies in the line of duty. He meets an 11-year-old (Nathan Gamble of "Dolphin Tale") whose soldier dad was killed in Afghanistan, and a friendship springs up. The former Derby champ teaches his young protégé about racing, but then they find out the Derby's financial demise is imminent.

Bernsen wrote the script after reading a newspaper story about the dire difficulties of the AASBD. (It's now in the black, partly because 10 percent of the money raised to make the film and portions of any profits have gone to that group.)

All weekend events are free, though reservations are suggested for the Saturday screenings. (Bernsen will sign autographs and speak after both.) Showings are 11 a.m. at the Marquee Theatre, 101 S. Green St., Morganton ( 25hillmorgan ton.eventbrite.com) and 6 p.m. at Charlotte's EpiCentre Theaters, 210 E. Trade St. ( 25hill charlotte.eventbrite.com) .

On Sunday, Bernsen will go back to Morganton for a race from noon to 5 at Burke County Fairgrounds, 145 Bost Road. Anyone may participate, even adults and inexperienced racers. Coaches will offer safety directions and skill tips.
