Electric violinist performs at Hough High

By Dave Vieser

A crowd of 600 people gathered at Hough High School in Cornelius recently to hear local students perform music in a whole new way.

The event was a concert by electric violinist Mark Wood and a group of more than 140 students playing the music of such rock greats as Led Zeppelin, Cold Play and Queen. Cornelius was the most recent stop on Wood's nationwide tour called Electrify Your Strings.

"That was a wonderful show, a complete sellout" said Wood. "It was so exciting to cheer these kids on and watch the enthusiasm and interest as they performed the selections."

The Oct. 25 concert was coordinated by the Bailey Middle School Orchestra Patrons, and local students, parents and faculty prepared intensely for the event. Students from 26 public, private, charter and home schools dedicated 12 hours over a two-day period to learn the music.

In addition, 12 orchestra directors committed their time, curriculum and resources to allow their students to participate, which is an important part of the tour's goal, Wood said.
