An occasional series saluting young people carving out a future in the arts.
Last spring brought a milestone for Tatiana Krzesicki. As a winner of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra's annual contest, she had her first chance to solo with an orchestra.
"I loved getting up there on the stage with all the beautiful melodies and sounds behind me," she says. "It was just - wow!"
Tatiana began studying the violin when she was 3 1/2. For a long time, having to practice put a damper on her enjoyment. But now, at 12, "I'm thinking of it in a more mature way," she says. "I've recently started to really love it."
She's passing that on to others. Last school year, she began helping Rosemary Furniss teach budding violinists at Winterfield Elementary, where the Charlotte Symphony has a music program. "It was great seeing all the joy on their faces when they got the things we were teaching them," she says.
Tatiana goes to Winterfield twice a month after finishing her day at Charlotte Latin School. She'll join her school's string orchestra next semester - on top of being the principal second violinist in the main Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra.
In the middle of all that music, Tatiana also enjoys writing poetry and studying science. "I love learning about all the intricate things about the world that you'd never know," she says. So she isn't ready to map out her future.
"The violin is something I love to do," she says. "But I'm not sure yet."
