The Charlotte Latin and Providence volleyball teams are used to winning championships.

This year, both the Panthers and Hawks won their respective titles, boasting some of the best talent in the state.

Latin (40-2) won its eighth straight NCISAA 3A state title with coach Suzie Pignetti again leading the way (227-10 in the past eight years), with the Hawks sweeping Southlake Christian to win it all.

But on the court, junior all-state outside hitter Eve Davis, the co-Observer Player of the Year, had a record setting year with 599 kills, 117 aces and 352 digs.

Davis became only the second Latin player under Pignetti to register 1,000 kills in her career - in only her third season as a Hawk.

Davis, who also plays for the Carolina Junior Volleyball club team, is one of the top players in the state at any level in high school and club, Pignetti said.

Meanwhile, Providence was just as impressive, as coach Karen Bradbury, the Observer Coach of the Year, finally captured her state title, as the Panthers (31-2), the 2010 4A state runner-up (and 2006 under Bradbury), beat Wilmington Hoggard in the final.

Bradbury helped Providence notch its fifth state title overall, the first coming under former Panthers coach Zoe Bell, now the coach at Ardrey Kell.

Providence also had an immense amount of talent on the court, with Southwestern 4A Player of the Year Casey Rieger, who shares co-Observer Player of the Year honors with Davis, after registering 316 kills during the season.

Providence's Megan Edwards was also strongly considered for player of the year.

While Providence and Latin dominated the headlines, Newton-Conover won a 2A state title, and North Iredell was 3A state runner-up.
