GREENSBORO For one half, the Butler Bulldogs looked like the two-time defending state champions that had won 12 straight playoff games.
In the second half, the Bulldogs looked like anything but champions, as Page scored 34 unanswered points to turn a 20-point deficit into a 40-26 win over Butler in the NCHSAA 4A West regional semifinal game. Page (13-0) will host undefeated Mallard Creek (13-0) next week in the 4AA West final.
While Page made the comeback, Butler was a big contributor with uncharacteristic mistakes and turnovers repeatedly in the fourth quarter.
Junior Butler quarterback Riley Ferguson, who was on target for most of the game with 421 yards passing and three touchdowns, started making mistakes when it mattered most. Ferguson threw three interceptions in the final 15 minutes of the game, including two in the end zone in the final quarter, and also had a fumble.
Junior receiver Channing Stribling also had a big miscue, fumbling a kickoff return with just over four minutes to play and his team trailing by seven.
Butler also had a Todjrei Graham 85-yard fumble recovery and touchdown called back for an illegal block, with about eight minutes left in the third quarter that could have changed momentum.
"You can't make mistakes against a team like Page, they are too good for that," Butler coach Brian Hales said. "Any time you do makes mistakes, they are going to be magnified, and they (Page) are going to take advantage of them."
While Butler made mistakes, Page senior quarterback James Summers, a N.C. State commitment, made all the plays in the final half, as he totaled 162 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the ground in addition to 86 yards passing and two touchdown tosses.
Summers opened the second half with a 25-yard touchdown scamper on a fourth-and-1 play to get the Pirates within a score at 26-19 just a minute and 22 seconds into the half.
Then, midway through the third quarter, Summers burst down the right sideline 39 yards for another score to tie the game the game at 26.
"We had to face a lot of adversity tonight," Summers said. "But we went in at halftime and made some adjustments. I told Coach (Kevin Gillespie) to give me the ball, and that's what we did."
After the first of three Ferguson interceptions, Summers finally gave his team the lead with 1-yard pass to Orlando Hatfield with 4:48 left in the game.
Then, after Stribling fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Page needed only two plays for senior Shaun Workinger to burst up the middle for a 26-yard touchdown run that all but put the game out of reach with just over three minutes to play.
