A 24-year-old man was injured Wednesday afternoon when he fell while climbing on Crowder's Mountain in Gaston County.

Just after 2:30 p.m., authorities learned that a rock climber had fallen as he scaled the mountain near the Red Wall.

The man lost his footing and struck the side of the mountain several times, said Chris Stowe of Crowder's Mountain Fire & Rescue.

More than 30 rescuers from Crowder's Mountain Fire & Rescue, the Gastonia Fire Department and Gaston Emergency Medical Services assisted in the rescue effort.

Rescuers climbed the mountain and brought the man down in about one hour, Stowe said. In total, the operation took about two hours to complete.

The climber, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Stowe said. The man was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital.

No other injuries were reported.
