Sweet 16 No. 1 West Charlotte vs. West Meck basketball, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.: The Lions, reigning N.C. 4A state champions, make their season debut about a week later than most of their contemporaries. The game is at J.C. Smith.

No. 3 Hopewell girls at No. 4 Myers Park basketball, Monday, 6:15 p.m.: The two highest-rated public school teams in the poll meet in an early-season showdown. Is this a regional preview?

Northern Guilford vs. Crest, N.C. 3AA football championship, Friday, 7:30 p.m.: In Chapel Hill, Crest is in the finals for the second straight year. Northern Guilford beat the Chargers by a point in 2010.

Scotland County vs. Porter Ridge, N.C. 4A football championship, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.: Two teams looking for their first state championship meet at Wake Forest.

Havelock at West Rowan, N.C. 3A football championship, Saturday, 11 a.m.: West Rowan goes for its fourth straight state championship in Chapel Hill. After losing in the regional final the past two seasons, Havelock advanced to the championship game with a 64-7 victory over Cleveland.

Lincolnton vs. Tarboro, N.C. 2A football championship, Saturday, 11 a.m.: At N.C. State, Lincolnton will go for its third state title since 1993 and first since 2007.
