A woman was jailed Tuesday after police said they found the pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run that killed a 30-year-old woman last week.
Just before 3 a.m. Nov. 20, Valerie Michelle Miranda was heading home from a shift at a fast-food restaurant when she crossed Monroe Road near Ashmore Drive. She was struck by a pickup - described as having dual rear wheels and possible damage to a front headlight - traveling toward uptown. The truck sped away without stopping, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
Miranda, an artistic woman described as a free spirit, died at the scene.
On Tuesday, police announced they had received information that led them to a 2008 Ford F150 parked at a Charlotte home. After investigators interviewed the truck's owner, Amber Nicole De Jesus, 26, police charged her with felony hit and run, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia.
The truck was discovered on Darden Court, according to reports. Records show De Jesus has lived at a home on that street, which is about three miles from the crash scene.
On Tuesday, Miranda's mother, Brandy Miranda, told the Observer she had been shopping for flowers to hand out at her daughter's memorial service when police called to tell her they'd found the truck and suspect.
After receiving the news, Brandy Miranda stopped by the McDonald's restaurant where her daughter worked to pick up her last paycheck. She said employees there had set up a display with photos of her daughter, who grew up in Charlotte and attended Northwest School of the Arts.
Brandy Miranda recalled how when her daughter was a girl, she would accompany her parents to a teller machine and exclaim "Paper, paper!" as the receipt printed. She wanted to draw on it, her mother said.
"She had been artistic ever since she was a tiny little thing," she said. "She would have made a great cartoonist."
A memorial service for Miranda will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Christlife Church.
The church is collecting donations to pay for Miranda's funeral. Donations can be sent to: Christlife Church, 8617 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28270. For details, call: 704-541-8850. Staff researcher Maria David contributed.
