NEWTON, N.C. – A Hickory man is facing multiple charges, including DWI, after slamming into a DWI mobile command center Sunday morning.

The incident happened on US 321 at the intersection of 9th Street around 2:45 a.m.

Law enforcement officers were conducting a DWI checkpoint when a 1989 red Chevy Camaro rammed into the back of the "Booze it and Lose it" mobile unit. People were inside the unit at the time, but no one was hurt.

Newton police say 21-year-old Douglas Shane Southard was driving the Camaro. Southard was transported to Catawba Memorial with non-life threatening injuries.

As of Monday morning Southard is listed in stable condition.

He is also charged with driving with a revoked license, careless and reckless driving and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The DWI checkpoint was in the process of wrapping up at the time of the crash.
