Checkers' Durno powers past former team

By Tim Donelli

The Charlotte Checkers started what they hope will be a new winning streak Sunday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.

After seeing their team-record five-game winning streak end Saturday night in a 4-3 loss to the Texas Stars, the Checkers rebounded with a 4-3 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters.

Charlotte (15-7-1-1) improved to 4-1 on its six-game homestand and 9-2-0-1 overall at home. Checkers goalie Mike Murphy wasn't perfect, but he made some timely saves and won his third game in a row.

Chris Durno, a former Monster, scored the game-winning goal for the Checkers with just one minute, 37 seconds left in the game. Durno, parked in front of Lake Erie goalie Trevor Cann, tipped in Michal Jordan's shot from the point.

"It's always good to get a goal, whether it's a tip, it goes in off your body or another way," said Durno. "Especially when it's against your former team."

The Checkers jumped to a 2-0 first-period lead off goals by John Matsumoto and Drayson Bowman. The teams exchanged goals in the second period and Charlotte entered the final period with a 3-1 lead.

Chris Terry scored the Checkers' second-period goal on a heads-up play behind the Monsters net. Cann misplayed the puck behind the goal, Terry scooped up the loose puck and scored a wraparound goal with the Checkers shorthanded.

"It was probably one of the easier ones I'll score in this league," said Terry. "But it was a big goal and I'll take it."

Lake Erie (10-11-1-1) climbed back in the final period with goals by Hugh Jessiman and Evan Brophey to tie the game at 3 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Both teams had chances to take the lead before Durno's late tally gave the Checkers the victory.

Charlotte will close out its homestand tonight with a rematch against the Monsters at 7.
