GREENSBORO U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., took a playful jab at President Barack Obama's use of teleprompters Monday morning during his own speech to the N.C. Farm Bureau.
Burr said he was thrown off by the "presidential cheat sheets" in front of him as he spoke to about 800 members at the bureau's annual convention in Greensboro. "I want it duly noted I'm not using this teleprompter," he said to the chuckling audience.
In a 20-minute talk, Burr said favorable programs may need to be reformed. He talked of changing Medicare and Medicaid and reforming Social Security "so that the solvency of Social Security guarantees every person in this room when they get 65, they're actually going to get what they were promised and not half of what that amount should have been."
Burr drew applause when he spoke of overhauling the guest worker program. He talked of efforts to move the program from the Labor Department to the Agriculture Department or allowing states to manage the program individually.
"I'm convinced if the president is serious about job creation, then unleash agriculture on the rest of the world," he said. "Take the burdensome hurdles away and let you produce, and this economy will go nuts."
