The N.C. Medical Examiner's office in Chapel Hill released the remains of Zahra Baker to a Hickory funeral home two weeks ago, according to a report by WBTV. The remains were cremated and given to Zahra's father, Adam.
The investigation into Zahra's disappearance and death drew an outpouring of sympathy from around the world. Photos of the young Australian girl, who lost a leg and much of her hearing to cancer, fueled anger at her stepmother, who was ultimately sentenced Sept. 15 to 15 to 18 years in prison on second-degree murder charges.
Pieces of Zahra's body were found scattered across Caldwell County, and authorities still don't know how she died.
After a waiting period, the medical examiner's office releases remains to a family member or another designee. Officials have said in the past that Adam Baker would be the first person eligible to ask for Zahra's remains.
