UNC Charlotte officials plan to break ground this afternoon on a new facility designed to help encourage more partnerships between the university and private industry.
Known as the PORTAL building, the $37 million project is the latest significant development for the nearly 10-year-old Charlotte Research Institute, the university's link to research, academia and the business community.
PORTAL stands for Partnership, Outreach and Research to Accelerate Learning.
The groundbreaking is set for 1:45 p.m. today by the entrance to the research institute off North Tryon Street.
The 95,000-square-foot building should open by late 2013 or early 2014. IT will house the Ben Craig Center business incubator and the universitys Technology Transfer Office.
The institute envisions the building housing private research and development teams and large-scale research projects.
