January is the time for new beginnings, and for me, this year brings an especially exciting challenge. I’ve been writing for SouthPark Magazine for two years, and I’m so thrilled to contribute in a new way now as editor. Charlotte stays atop the trends in fashion, cuisine, the arts; everything you need to live a fully metropolitan life is right here around us. I hope to continue to reflect our community back to you with feature stories, profiles on exceptional individuals and fresh ideas on how to get the most out of life in Charlotte, starting with a great cup of coffee.

It’s everywhere we turn, isn’t it? Coffee is not only a drink that (for many of us) lets us know the day has truly begun, but a cultural phenomenon as well. It’s a social occasion, an excuse to chat, a reason to take that midday break. It’s over coffee that co-workers become friends. And while these factors might suggest that the coffee itself isn’t what’s important, a revival has been stirring. There’s a budding appreciation for the art of coffee, and not the instant, press-a-button, load-it-with-syrup kind of coffee. The classic European style of espresso, in which each shot pulled takes skill and even artistry, is growing a following in Charlotte. Learn about some local spots that are bringing the best to us (like Central Coffee Co., the creators of the beautiful latte on the cover).

For the new year, we’ve compiled timely advice from Charlotte financial gurus to help you start 2012 on financially steady footing. You can certainly rest easier when you trust and understand the financial advice you’re given, and taking proactive steps to make sure your financial plans are working cohesively will help secure a solid future.

We’ve also taken a look at Mind Over Body, the sports psychology division of Southeast Psych, to get a glimpse into this effective component of athletes’ training; the positive outlook of Charlotte fitness blogger Caitlin Boyle; and – on the home front – how having a vision for your master bath can transform it into a serene, inviting space.

Thanks for having me, SouthPark readers. Please do reach out with ideas, questions or even just to say hello any time. If I don’t respond right away, it’s probably because I’m at Central Coffee, enjoying a perfect latte.

Cheers to a meaningful and bountiful 2012!
