South Pointe Stallions are No. 1 in final stretch

By Langston Wertz Jr.

And the 2011 Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 football champion is Rock Hill's South Pointe High.

The Stallions, who were never ranked No. 1 in the regular season, jumped past previous No.1 Porter Ridge after the Pirates lost 42-16 to Scotland County in the N.C. 4A championship game.

South Pointe won the S.C. 3A championship 42-27 over previously unbeaten Bluffton.

Corey Neely ran back two punts in the championship game, sparking South Pointe to its second state title in the school's six-year history. South Pointe also won in 2008, when it won its first Sweet 16 championship.

Only four teams have won Sweet 16 championships since the start of the 2000 season. Independence won seven straight from 2000-06. Charlotte Latin won in 2007 after winning its third straight private schools championship. South Pointe won in 2008, then Butler won the past two seasons.
