Police are searching for a thief who stole four guns from a Carolina Panthers player’s truck this week in northern Charlotte.

Someone broke into Kion Wilson’s F250 truck in the Best Buy parking lot near Northlake Mall just after 5 p.m. Monday, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report.

The thief took four guns worth $1,700. The stolen guns are a Glock 23, a 12-gauge shotgun, an FN 57 handgun and a Smith and Wesson, according to the Observer’s news partner, WCNC-TV.

The report also said a door lock on the truck was damaged during the break-in.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he had not heard about the situation with Wilson, a backup linebacker, until a team official told him about it following Wednesday’s practice.

“I just heard about it when I came off (the practice field),” Rivera said. “The thing we have to find out is just make sure they’re all registered and then we’ll go from there.”

Later Wednesday, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told the Observer that Wilson’s guns were registered and that Wilson was licensed to travel with them. Wilson told team officials he was on his way to a shooting range, stopped by the mall to return something and came out to find his truck had been broken into. Wilson then called police.

“I think he probably knows he would have been better off just going to the firing range directly,” Hurney said. “But they were registered, and he was licensed to have them in the vehicle.”

Wilson, 25, was not available for comment. A team spokesman said Wilson remains on the team.

Wilson has played sparingly in four games for the Panthers since being signed from the team’s practice squad in November.

While Wilson was playing football as a student at the University of South Florida, two of his brothers were killed in separate shootings in 2009, ESPN reported. Also, his father was murdered when Wilson was a child.

Police have not identified suspects in Monday's incident. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 704-432-3801.
