The Sears full-line store in Statesville will close as part of its parent company's move to shut down more than 100 stores nationwide.

Sears Holdings Corp. on Thursday listed 79 of the stores it plans to close. Besides the Sears at 1689 E. Broad St. in Statesville, three other N.C. Sears stores are closing, in High Point, Rocky Mount and Morehead City. The Sears in Sumter, S.C., also will close.

No Kmarts in the two states were on the list.

The company announced earlier this week it would shutter 100 to 120 Sears and Kmart stores around the country after holiday sales came in weaker than expected. More announcements will be made "as they come available," the company said.

The company did not say how many employees would be affected. A typical store employs between 40 and 80, Sears said.

Sears Holdings operates about 4,000 stores across the U.S. and Canada. But comparable store sales have fallen, and the company said earlier this week it no longer will keep "marginally performing" stores open.

The Charlotte area is home to seven Kmart stores and five traditional Sears stores. Combined, the company employs about 1,800 across the region, according to a Charlotte Chamber of Commerce publication.

Florida was the hardest-hit state in the closings announced Thursday, losing 11 stores. Ohio, Michigan and Georgia are not far behind, with six store closures planned in each of those states.

The Associated Press contributed.
