Family Fun Favorites - 2011

It’s that time of year again to look back and post a completely non-scientific and highly-biased reflection on our fun highlights from the past year.

In retrospect, the events that I think were the most fun for our kids were usually mother-son or mother-daughter outings, which was a bit of a revelation for me. Like all moms, I’m usually running around like a chicken with my head cut off, and tend to forget what a precious gift alone time can be.

And so, along with losing that last 10 pounds, this year I am resolving to set aside a bit more one-on-one time with my kids. Here are just a few of our favorites:

MOVIE: Muppets, hands down. A million thumbs up.

PARK: The life-sized birdhouse and nature-inspired musical instruments at Reedy Creek Park makes this an easy winner.

LIBRARY: ImaginOn is the bees knees as far as we’re concerned. Adding a ride up on the Lynx is extra adventurous, but the validated parking down below is a good bet, too.

EDUCATIONAL: This one’s a tie between Discovery Place (a constant source of learning disguised as fun) and the Mint Museum, which my kids liked so much that they still talk about. Honorable shout-out to the Schiele Museum of Natural History for their Pirates exhibit.

LITTLE GUYS: We love the Charlotte Nature Center’s low-key vibe and water tables that are just the right size for little ones.

GIRLS: Disney on Ice took the prize for us, kicking up Princess fantasy to a whole new level.

BOYS: This was a tough one, but my vote goes to the U.S. Whitewater Center because it’s so different. One of the few times when I’ve seen my seven-year old son completely wrung out at the end of the day.

TWEENS & TEENS: The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art sets the stage for a grown-up day out for kids and their parents. Niki de Saint Phalle’s Firebird is simply awesome for all ages.

HOLIDAY: The light show and festivities at the Charlotte Motor Speedway were one of the best family outings that we had all year (or ever, actually). Where else can you test the limits of your minivan on a racetrack?

FUN EXCURSION: Carolina Beach can’t be beat when it comes to affordable beachy fun. The legendary Britt’s donuts don’t hurt, either.

We have so much to look forward to in 2012! Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, museums, parks and more await in our fine Queen City. Have a fun adventure idea to share? Let me know below!
