After losing to the San Antonio Rampage on Tuesday night, the two teams reversed roles Wednesday.
A stellar performance by Charlotte rookie goaltender John Muse and goals by Jerome Samson and Riley Nash allowed the Checkers to defeat the Rampage 2-1, and split their two-game home series with San Antonio (16-16-2-0).
It was a goalie's game as Muse and San Antonio netminder Dov Grumet-Morris stole the show. Both made spectacular saves and turned back 87 of a combined 90 shots. Muse finished the game with 42 saves and saw his shutout bid end with a late Rampage goal with just a minute remaining in the contest.
"I thought I tracked the puck well and the team did a great job eliminating their chances," Muse said. "There were a lot of long shots which are much easier than the in-close shots. We did a good job of keeping everyone on the perimeter tonight."
Samson had a solid game, scoring the Checkers' first goal and playing feisty, physical hockey.
"That's his game," Checkers coach Jeff Daniels said. "He's one of the better players at this level protecting the puck, and finding ways of getting to the net and scoring goals."
After getting shut out by Grumet-Morris on Tuesday, Charlotte (20-12-2-1) finally solved the veteran goalie with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first period. Samson took a pass from Brett Sutter and scored his 15th goal of the season from in close for a 1-0 Charlotte lead.
Charlotte kept the pressure on in the second period with 19 shots, but two hit goal posts and solid play by Grumet-Morris kept the Checkers' lead at 1-0.
Charlotte scored what proved to be the winning goal early in the third period when Nash deflected in Michal Jordan's shot from the point for a 2-0 Checkers advantage.
Charlotte will head out of town for a two-game midwest stint with games Saturday in Milwaukee, and Sunday in Chicago.
