Oakland fires coach after one season

By Josh Dubow
Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. The Oakland Raiders fired coach Hue Jackson on Tuesday after just one season at the helm in the first major move since Reggie McKenzie was hired as general manager.

The decision to get rid of Jackson came four days after the team announced hiring McKenzie as the team's first GM since the death of longtime owner Al Davis in October.

The move marks a rapid fall for Jackson, who was in charge of personnel decisions and coaching after Davis died of heart failure Oct. 8.

Jackson made the trade for quarterback Carson Palmer after starter Jason Campbell broke his collarbone, costing the Raiders a 2012 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2013 second-rounder.

While Palmer showed signs of giving the Raiders a big-time quarterback, he was unable to get Oakland to the playoffs for the first time since 2002, raising questions about the trade.

After starting the season 7-4, the Raiders lost four of their final five games to mark their ninth straight season without a winning record or a playoff berth.

Notes

Packers coach's son dead: Police recovered the body of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin's son from an icy Wisconsin river and said Tuesday they were trying to figure out how he died.

News of Philbin's death comes as the Packers prepare to host the New York Giants in an NFC playoff game Sunday. The team canceled players' media availability Monday shortly before Philbin's body was found.

It was unclear whether Joe Philbin will continue to work with the team this week. Coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Monday he has a contingency plan if Philbin needs time off but didn't elaborate. Team spokesman Aaron Popkey declined further comment Tuesday.

Ravens veteran WR Mason retires: Veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason has decided to retire after 15 NFL seasons.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection caught 943 career passes for 12,061 yards and 66 touchdowns.

Broncos promote WR Goodwin: The Denver Broncos promoted wide receiver D'Andre Goodwin from their practice squad and placed fullback Spencer Larsen on injured reserve with a sprained left knee.
